These workshops are designed for the families of individuals of all ages who have learning disabilities and display behaviours which may be deemed as challenging. They are available to families who have loved ones living both within and outside of the home environment.
The approach is person-centred, non-aversive and reflects families’ perspectives.
The workshops give participants basic skills in functional assessment, reactive/proactive strategies and behaviour support plans.
The style is interactive and informal – participation is encouraged through discussions and activities in small/whole groups.
The workshops are titled ‘Understanding Challenging Behaviour and Supporting Behaviour Change’ and are delivered over two sessions within school hours. It is important that all participants attend both of the above workshops.
You will discuss areas such as:
What is challenging behaviour
The impact of challenging behaviour
Why do people challenge
Purposes (functions) of behaviour
How to look after yourself
Positive behaviour support
How to prevent challenging behaviour
How to stop behaviour escalating
How to manage in a crisis
What to do after an incident
Individual planning and behaviour support plans
Families will be provided with the opportunity to focus on their loved one specifically and to undertake work relevant to their individual situations.
